The questions hardware startups customers actually ask

  • Printed parts will look like prototypes. Will customers accept them?

    At draft or standard finish, yes they will look printed. At showpiece finish, 0.08 mm layers, sanded to 400 grit, primed, most people can't tell without being told. Budget the finish level by who is looking: draft for your own testing, showpiece for the ones you photograph or hand to investors.

  • When should we actually tool up?

    Not until you've shipped a few hundred units of a design nobody has asked you to change. The crossover on cost is usually somewhere between 1,000 and 5,000 units, but the real trigger is design stability, not volume. Tooling a design that then changes costs you the whole tool.

  • Can you keep up if we suddenly get an order for 200 units?

    Both cells run in parallel and parts are plated to fill the build area, so throughput is considerably higher than a single-part lead time suggests. Send the geometry and the quantity and we'll give you a realistic schedule rather than an optimistic one.
